Abstract

We develop a new analytic approach to the Schwinger model in the Hamiltonian lattice gauge theory with Wilson fermions. The vacuum structure is examined by means of a unitary transformation and the variational method. The chiral order parameter $〈\overline{\ensuremath{\psi}}\ensuremath{\psi}〉$ is calculated for any coupling constant. Chiral symmetry is shown to be broken in the massless limit and good scaling behavior is observed. Our result is consistent with the exactly calculable value.
