Abstract

China’s geo-economic strategy with Southeast Asia is part of a broader global agenda. Since 2012, the General Secretary of the Communist Party of China, Xi Jinping, has accelerated economic policies and market opportunities throughout the region. The One Belt, One Road initiative, also referred to as the New Silk Road, is an integrated vision for extending China’s trans-regional economic corridors from Europe across Asia. This chapter establishes the historical and political framework for Chinese State Capitalism in Southeast Asia. The author analyzes the advantages to China in attaining geo-economic goals in the region. The strategic rise in economic influence is examined in the context of military interest and China’s political commitments.
