Abstract

Chapter 2 provides an overview of the relevant literature and contextualizes this research. It first discusses a variety of Chinese masculinities in order to position ordinary young men within the masculinity paradigm. Specifically, it details plural ways of being a Chinese man across different historical periods and social classes, as well as problematizing recent media discourses of masculinity in relation to its various new forms and ‘crisis’. Following this, the focus shifts to theoretical discussions about identity formation and cultural values that have influenced the analysis of young men’s everyday experiences and gender in this research.
