Abstract

Significance The plan actually covers not only the fully immersive digital environments that the term 'virtual reality' (VR) refers to in English, but also 'augmented reality' (AR), in which digital objects and images are superimposed on the physical world. Impacts Application trials will take place in a wide range of areas, both in consumer-facing activities and the underlying hardware and science. VR and AR are central to most visions of a 'metaverse': a system of shared, interactive online 3D virtual environments. The growing skills and capabilities created by China's VR and AR efforts will create opportunities for foreign tech companies. Foreign sanctions, in particular US sanctions, might impose constraints on China's development and application of VR and AR technologies.
