Abstract

The formal establishment of a unified National Government under the Kuomintang (KMT) in Nanjing took place in early February 1928. It was achieved after almost a year of intraparty rivalry, bickering, and rift, often marked by military confrontations and the respective decisions reached by rival groups to part with the CCP and to purge the Communists from their ranks.1 In the following decade, the Nanjing Government gradually extended its power to become the internationally recognized central government of China. However, the Nationalist Government's rule during the Nanjing decade (1928-1937) has been a very controversial one. The various assessments of this period range from extremely critical and damning to one of high praise.
