Abstract
The People’s Republic of China (PRC), born on 1 October 1949, is still at the growing, young adult stage in terms of the long arc of Chinese history (For example, the Qing Dynasty, the last imperial dynasty of the Middle Kingdom, had a lifespan of about 268 years [1644–1912]. See Warren I. Cohen, East Asia at the Center: Four Thousand Years of Engagement with the World [New York: Columbia University Press, 2000], 216–244). It will probably take another 15–20 years for the PRC to reach prime maturity and restore the Middle Kingdom, of which the PRC is the modern reincarnation, to its traditional position as Asia’s regional hegemon.
