Abstract
This chapter analyzes the security and economic implications of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI)-linked corridor projects, particularly the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project; and examines the security and economic implications of the project. It explains whether Pakistan’s burgeoning relationship with China is a matter of concern for her neighbours; and considers the future prospects for the CPEC. In order to facilitate unimpeded trade, BRI countries decided to resolve investment and trade facilitation issues, reduce investment and trade barriers, lower trade and investment costs, as well as promote regional economic integration. Pakistan has the potential to serve as a nexus for the Silk Road Economic Belt and the Maritime Silk Road. Over time, an overland link across Pakistan to the Arabian Sea would help alleviate China’s heavy dependence on the Malacca and Lombok/Makassar straits in Southeast Asia. Pakistan awarded the contract for construction and operation to China in 2013.
