Abstract

In 2005, President Hu Jintao declared the construction of a harmonious society as a socio-economic goal in China. Zhou et al. (Journal of Supply Chain and Operations Management, 10(1), 54–65, 2012) explained that a harmonious society is characterized as one that follows modern ideas like democracy, fairness, justice, vitality, stability, orderliness and harmonious co-existence between humans and the environment. China’s vision has changed in the last years to focus on societal balance and harmony rather than economic growth. Since then, the Chinese government strongly urges the businesses to contribute towards a sustainable development through a harmonious society. This put some pressure on the homogenous society in China to acknowledge the implementation of CSR. According to our analysis, a number of factors play a role for CSR and non-CSR preferences of young jobseekers. They show concern over a pleasant work atmosphere and a good work-life balance. Even though Chinese society shows a high concern over environmental and workplace issues, a cluster analysis revealed that two thirds of the respondents are less concerned about socio-ecological responsibilities.
