Abstract
May 1989 was a heartbreaking time. In the heat of the sun during the day or in the chilly, windy nights, I gazed mutely at the Monument to the People's Heroes. My empty stomach shook with hollow rumbles. Conscious thought seemed to be fading away. I lay on the ground, quietly, without words, alongside my beloved fellow students. We were too weak to sit up, but with all our remaining strength, we wanted to shout: "China, what has happened to you?"
