Abstract
The latest close encounters between the United States and China in the Taiwan Strait have given great pause for thought and commentary China's scheduling of her military exercises to coincide with the run‐up to Taiwan's first democratic Presidential elections has sent alarm signals around Asia and the world not only over Beijing's intentions on Taiwan, but as to the nature of her role in the region and beyond, particularly given President Lee's recent victory in the 23 March section, Damon Bristow sets the current crisis in context, highlighting in particular US‐Chinese relations and the difficult policy tightrope that Washington is trying to walk in this key election year.
