Abstract

Since 2019, NATO member countries have been debating whether – and if so how – to develop a common position on China. After a formal reflection process in 2020 and a leaders’ summit in June 2021, it appears the allies agree that China’s ambitions and assertive behaviour present a serious challenge to the current international order. But many points are still disputed and will be the subject of negotiations in the coming year as NATO drafts a new Strategic Concept to be released in 2022.
