Abstract

The present status of the coal industry in China is described. Topics discussed include the distribution of coal-mining areas, planned coal production increases, mining methods, standards of mechanization, transportation and sale of coal, scientific research, equipment manufacture, and worker education. Current plans call for a 1.2 billion-ton annual coal production target to be realized by the end of this century. The measures to be adopted for achieving this result are discussed. The paper concludes with a presentation of China's “open policy” as applied to the development of the coal industry, and the measures adopted in importing technology and in expanding economic and technological exchanges and co-operation with the outside world.
