Abstract
IT HAS BEEN 13 YEARS SINCE AMOCO Chemical signed a letter of intent to build a purified terephthalic acid (PTA) facility in Zhuhai, a special economic zone adjacent to Macau in China. Following numerous delays, construction of the $360 million project is finally under way and due to be completed by the end of next year. The facility will be Zhuhai's only large-scale chemical plant. PTA is used, along with ethylene glycol, in the manufacture of polyester for products such as fiber and soda bottles. Following the acquisition of Amoco, BP became the feed-stock's largest producer. Whereas there is an oversupply of PTA in Asia as a whole, China is a major importer of I the material, says Linda Shum, president of BP Zhuhai Chemical, the BP venture in Zhuhai.
