Abstract

On the teaching side, Chinese studies at Leiden are visible in multidisciplinary, China-focused undergraduate and graduate programmes and programme tracks. With regard to research, Chinese studies are part of the Leiden University Institute for Area Studies, with two faculty members holding joint appointments with the Leiden University Centre for Linguistics. Also, in a government-initiated 'profiling' exercise in which individual universities promote what they see as their distinctive, key fields of research, the Leiden profile includes the Asian Modernities and Traditions network. Furthermore, a loosely defined notion of area studies is what ties the university together with several other Leiden-based institutions such as the Africa Studies Center, the International Institute for Asian Studies, the Royal Netherlands Institute for Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies, and the Netherlands Institute for the Near East. Within area studies at the university, Chinese studies and Japanese studies are the largest and most multidisciplinary units. Keywords: Chinese studies; Japanese studies; Leiden profile
