Abstract

AFTER 15 YEARS OF NEGOtiations, China and Taiwan are set to become members of the World Trade Organization following a breakthrough meeting in Geneva last week. Discussions took a few days longer than originally expected to complete as negotiators' attention focused on events unfolding in New York City and Washington, D.C. But China, the U.S., and Europe were eventually able to overcome the last major snag—access to China's insurance market. next and final step for China and Taiwan is to gain formal admission into WTO at the organization's 4th Ministerial Conference that will take place in Doha, Qatar, in early November. This is just a formality, as both China and Taiwan have concluded bilateral agreements with all the current members of the group. Chinese chemical industry is braced for some dramatic changes.
