Abstract

Recent developments in Northeast Asia have underlined both the complexity and the vital importance of this region. Here, four major nations interact closely with each other, their bilateral and multilateral relations having a major impact on the three small nations in the area, the two Koreas and Mongolia. Thus, in exploring the influence of the Sino-Japanese relationship on the Korean peninsula, present and future, one must always be aware of the larger context influencing and, on occasion, shaping that relationship. In examining the current domestic conditions and the foreign relations of these two nations, therefore, we shall frequently refer to the United States and Russia, as well as to the relevant trends in the two Koreas.
