Abstract

An investigation was made to elucidate changes in mandibular rotation (∠SN-MP) after treatment. The lateral cephalograms on 55 patients of anterior crossbite who were cured of crossbite with only chin cap were analyzed before and after treatment. The results were as follows. 1. In the group with reduction of ∠SN-MP after treatment, maxillar and mandibular bones moved anteriorly. In the group with no change, maxillar bone moved anteriorly and mandibular bone moved posteriorly. In the group with increase of ∠SN-MP after treatment, maxillar bone didn't move but mandibular bone moved posterior-inferiorly. 2. In all groups, upper incisors were displaced labially and lower incisors lingually. As a result, there are three different types of chin cap mecanism in the treatment. One is no change of maxillar and mandibular bones. Another is change both of maxillar and mandibular bones. And the last one is change of mandibular bone only. To determine to which groups patients belong to is important for predictions after treatment. And the difference of mandibular rotation after treatment is relatively related to the individual reaction of maxillary.
