Abstract

This article suggests the need to develop nuclear energy in Chile in order to cope with the country’s increasing energy demand and to diversify Chile’s energy mix, which is currently heavily dependent on imported fuels. The first part deals with the main aspects of the Chilean electricity system, while the second reviews Chilean legislation on nuclear energy to identify weaknesses that may pose obstacles to the broader acceptance of the nuclear option. The article identifies the following weaknesses: a poor institutional framework; restrictions on access to uranium; limits on nuclear energy exploitation; and energy safety regulation.
