Abstract

In an article in the October issue of Monthly Review , James Petras gave a good summary of what the Popular Unity ( Unidad Popular , UP) government of President Salvador Allende has accomplished in Chile during its first year in office. My purpose in the present report is neither to go over the same ground covered by Petras, nor to add further facts and details to his story. I want rather to try to analyze the political process now unfolding in Chile and to draw some tentative conclusions about possible developments from here on.
