Abstract

WINSTON, ANDREW S.; TORNEY, DOUGLAS; and LABBEE, PETER. Children's Self-Reinforcement: Some Evidence for Maximization of Payoff and Minimization of Effort. CHILD DEVELOPMENT, 1978, 49, 882-884. 40 grade 5 boys and girls worked at a wheel-turning task on 4 consecutive days. The child could select on each trial how many wheel turns would earn 1 token. Tokens were exchangeable for either 2 or 10 sec of cartoon-viewing time. Analysis indicated a significant drop in performance standards across sessions. The iesults contrast sharply with previous studies of self-reinforcement and suggest that children will tend toward maximization of payoff when given the opportunity to do so.
