Abstract

ROTHMAN, BONNIE S., and POTTS, MARION. Children's Search Behaviors and Strategy Choices in Problem Solving. CHILD DEVELOPMENT, 1977, 48, 1058-1061. Choice and use of problemsolving strategies were monitored during a picture comparison task. Across 90 kindergarten, second-, and fourth-grade boys and girls, there was decreasing use with age of a concrete systematic search strategy and increasing use of a more conceptual distinctive features strategy. In addition to initial strategy choice, strategy implementation revealed changes in problemsolving behaviors. Results for second and fourth graders indicated differences in the use of feedback contingencies. The methodology designed for the study permitted the monitoring of search strategy behaviors.
