Abstract
ABSTRACT The COVID-19 pandemic caused unprecedented disruptions, including lockdowns and changes to family dynamics. Whilst extensive research has demonstrated how adults perceived this transformation and its effects on children, little attention has been given to how children perceive this period. This study explores how Israeli children experienced the COVID-19 period and their parents’ behavior during the lockdowns. Semi-structured interviews and a playing cards method were conducted with a sample of 50 children aged 3–6. Results indicate that children exhibited conscious awareness of the changes the pandemic brought into their lives. One significant change children highlighted was their parents’ behavior, largely in two areas: 1. Division of parental roles at home and 2. Permissiveness in matters of discipline, especially with regard to screen time. This study contributes to a better understanding of children’s experiences in crisis from their viewpoint. In addition, it interrogates the different types of parenting behavior that were practiced during the COVID-19 period.
