Abstract

Abstract Divorce is a definite crisis period during which the nuclear family disintegrates. The dissolution and reorganizing process of divorce extends to children as well as to parents (Despert, 1953). Children of spouses obtaining a divorce can be seriously affected by the divorce process. The parents are in conflict and their ability to support and nurture their children is substantially decreased. Divorce may kindle in the children conflicts of loyalty to the respective parents (Schoen & Nelson, 1974). The children may become pawns in the parents’ displacement of anger, jealousy, raw hurt or embarrassed guilt. The children may also be required to accommodate two different patterns of living and two sets of values. Divorce is typically characterized as an abbreviated legal procedure with court proceedings as the final episode.
