Abstract

The present article reviews progress in the field of childhood traumatic stress and presents a developmental model of trauma in children and adolescents that can inform research, evaluation and treatment. Selected research findings from the UCLA Trauma Psychiatry Program are presented regarding the biology of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among adolescents, co‐morbid conditions and traumatic bereavement. A trauma/grief‐focused group‐psychotherapeutic approach for children and adolescents is described, with preliminary findings from treatment of children exposed to a catastrophic natural disaster and children exposed to chronic community violence.
