Abstract

2021 marks the 25th anniversary of the UN Children and Armed Conflict (CAAC) Mandate, established in 1996 to strengthen child protection in conflict zones; a Special Representative was appointed and requested to prepare annual reports on the matter to the UN General Assembly and Human Rights Council. In January, 2022, a UN study examined and reflected on the Mandate's evolution, including trends of six grave violations against children—defined by the UN Security Council as killing and maiming of children, recruitment or use of children as soldiers, sexual violence against children, abduction of children, attacks against schools or hospitals, and denial of humanitarian access for children.
