However, at times, children experience seemingly untenable situations that, when not mitigated in a timely manner, can lead to a variety of unhealthful emotions, mental disorders, pervasive hopelessness, and in extreme cases, death from suicide. This chapter examines the phenomenology of suicide in children and adolescents, suicide prevention, treatment approaches for youths who contemplate or attempt suicide, and strategies to reduce sensationalism and contagion, or copycat behavior, after a suicide attempt or suicide death.
