The onset of illness can occur rarely as early as 5 years of age, but after the age of 13 years, the incidence increases steadily. Early-onset (before age 18 y) and very early-onset (before age 13 y) schizophrenia are diagnosed by using the same criteria as in adults, and these forms appear to be continuous with the adult form of the disorder. Youths who have schizophrenia are predominantly males, have high rates of premorbid abnormalities and higher ratings on negative and positive symptoms, and often exhibit poor outcome. Schizophrenia is a phasic disorder, with individual variability.
