Abstract

Evidence suggests accelerated aging mechanisms in drug addiction and this effect may be potentiated by stressful experiences, particularly those that occurred early in life. Most studies have been investigating cellular senescence and premature aging by the increase rate of the telomere shortening in psychiatric patients. Recent reports suggest that DNA methylation (DNAm) in blood also accounts as an epigenetic clock with recognized value as a biological aging marker. However, it is unknown whether accelerated DNAm aging is also evident in the blood of patients with cocaine use disorder (CUD), in particular in association with early life stressful experiences.
