Abstract

CME Educational Objectives 1. Review the process through which vaccines are licensed and recommendations are developed for routine use. 2. Discuss immunization coverage rates. 3. Review possible strategies to improve immunization coverage rates. The drastic reduction in the incidence of vaccine-preventable diseases through childhood immunization represents one of public health’s greatest achievements. The social and economic benefits gained through the prevention of mortality and morbidity caused by infectious diseases have dramatically improved the lives of people around the world. The most impressive gains have been in developed countries, where abundant economic resources and extensive healthcare systems have supported the development and implementation of increasingly sophisticated and expensive vaccines.
