Abstract

Sickle cell disease is the name for a group of inherited conditions that affect the red blood cells. The most serious condition is sickle cell anaemia. Approximately 12 500–15 000 people in the UK have sickle cell disease and it affects 1 in every 2000 live births in England. Sickle cell disease is an inherited condition and the sickle cell trait needs to be passed on by both parents in order for the baby to acquire it. This article will summarise some of the symptoms of sickle cell disease and the treaments available for the condition.
