Abstract
The article deals with the fi rst period of life and activity of the outstanding state and military fi gure Mikhail Muravyov. The author describes the beginning of his scientifi c activity, his participation in the Patriotic War of 1812 and in the formation of higher military education and the General Staff service in the Russian Empire.
