Abstract

This paper reports on a study conducted in 2001 and 2002 to establish the range of labour related procedures that UK midwives undertake and the supporting training and governance mechanisms. Two postal questionnaires were sent to maternity services managers at UK maternity units, requesting information on the number and type of midwifery procedures undertaken and the clinical governance and training activities in place. The study concluded that despite government policy promoting greater parental choice there is a wide variation in the range of labour related tasks that midwives undertake in the UK. If more midwife led units are to be established as a way of promoting parental choice, then adequate governance and training mechanisms must be in place to enhance continuity of care and reduce transfers.
