Abstract

Abstract In 2009 there were an estimated 1,318,398 violent crimes and 9,320,971 property crimes reported to the police (US Department of Justice). Many of the victims of these crimes were under the age of 18. Minors often suffer from all of the same types of offenses as do adults—property and violent street crime. In addition to the victimization of youth in traditional street crimes, some offenses are specific to youth victims due to their status as minors. Children may be victims of child physical abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect, solicitation, child sex trafficking, bullying and school violence, and abduction.
