Child Sexual Abuse in Male Drug Addicts of Guadalajara, Mexico

Abstract

It has been reported that people who report child sexual abuse are at increased risk for drug sexual abuse. Meanwhile other scientists say that impact of child sexual abuse are overestimated and family environment can be confounded with the experience of child sexual abuse for poorer psychological adjustment. The objective of this study is to compare drug addiction and sexual characteristics between men who have a history of child sexual abuse and those without it. We conducted a survey study among 379 men who were in residential treatment centers in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. A third of the men interviewed (31%) reported child sexual abuse. From those the abusive person was a woman 25 % and 75% another man; the relationship of the abuser was 32% a neighbour, 25% a sibling or cousin, 14% a stranger, 14% a friend of the family, 13% uncle/aunt, 1% a parent and 1% a teacher. Those who reported that his life was affected by the experience of child sexual abuse were 73%.
