Abstract

To the Editor.—
We applaud the comments by Sherman et al (241:1001, 1979) on the problem of child-resistant containers for the elderly. However, while 33% of those persons older than 60 years had difficulty, only 9% discontinued use of the product, vs 15% for those 31 to 60 years and 20% younger than 30 years. This emphasizes the need for information to the elderly and testing their ability to use child-resistant containers properly. We strongly endorse the authors' suggestion that all health professionals caring for the elderly should demonstrate the container's proper use and that the patient's ability to comply should be tested. Further technological improvement in safety caps is also suggested.
