Abstract

ABSTRACT In years past, hospitalization often produced short and long-term traumatic effects on children. While an inpatient stay is still stressful for children and their parents, the efforts of the Child Life profession to meet families' psychological needs have resulted in better outcomes for all. This column outlines the history of Child Life, competencies of specialists, and goals of Child Life programs. The holdings and activities of the family resource center of the Mount Sinai Children's Hospital are described, along with the ways in which its librarian collaborated with other members of the pediatric health care team.
