Abstract

Innovation in services that improve the health of children is needed—otherwise, as the saying goes, “if you keep doing what you've done, you'll keep getting what you got”. Creative ideas are precious and in short supply. They must be publicised for others to adopt. One such gem is ChildLine, a free telephone support line in the UK for children and adolescents in danger or distress.1 Its first 12 years of service have been described in the Archives of Diseases in Childhood. In 1997/98, the service counselled more than 115 000 children, common problems being physical or sexual abuse or both (20%), bullying (17%), and family problems (13%).
