Abstract

This 160-page book was written for parents of young children. The author is a pediatric registered nurse in England. The book was republished in the United States after revisions by Dr Donna Beck, a practicing pediatrician who was in Tucson. The book is complete and covers most topics that pediatricians would touch on during health supervision visits. Throughout, the book emphasizes sound parenting practices. Cuddling and physical contact are repeatedly encouraged. The illustrations are beautiful and upbeat. The diagram on four ways to fold a diaper (p 40) converted me to the twist technique. Strong parts of the book were the discussions of safety features of various baby equipment, toy selections for different age groups, infant feeding, and sex education. The weak part of the book was the attempt to be an encyclopedia of acute and chronic illnesses in 30 pages. The comments were accurate but too brief to help
