Abstract

The birth of any baby brings with it a vast landscape of uncharted territory for parents. There are manifold challenges and a complexity of emotions to navigate. Parenting after loss undeniably intensifies the postnatal experience. This article acknowledges the specific experience of parenting a newborn after the non-perinatal loss of a baby or child. It highlights some of the ways in which midwives and other professionals effectively can support, advocate for and empower these parents during the postnatal period. It contributes to the ever-evolving discourse on how best women and their families can be supported in their unique journey through childbirth and early parenting.
