Abstract

The first department of child psychiatry in Norway was opened in 1950, and since 1951 child psychiatry has been a medical specialty, with a specified plan for 5 1/2 years of specialty training from 1969. Today the country's 19 counties have one or more multiprofessional outpatient units, and one-third have inpatient units for short assessment of families. A computerized program for registration of clinical work has been developed. Development of four regional university centers combining clinical practice with teaching and research is a present challenge.
