Abstract
This chapter focuses on the impact of mental illness in children at all stages—directly (child and adolescent psychiatry) and indirectly (perinatal psychiatry). Assessment of children raises specific issues, not just with respect to disorders of childhood, but also important areas such as consent and safety. Interventions in children will necessarily focus on the wider family. Psycho-social interventions, provided by a well-functioning MDT, are key in all mental illness, but particularly in this group. The complexities of prescribing medication for this age group means that if medications are required, you are likely to need expert advice. The post-natal period is a time of particular psychological vulnerability for women (and their babies) and an ability to detect problems and intervene early is essential. Key information presented about child, adolescent, and perinatal psychiatry, includes: • Specific aspects of assessment and consent in children. • Key features of childhood disorders, including pervasive developmental disorders, anxiety, and mood disorders. • Mental illness in pregnancy and the postnatal period. Practical tips include: • Psychological interventions in childhood. • Important considerations in assessment.
