Abstract

Abstract Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is characterized by localized inflammatory changes and is caused by multiple factors leading to tissue injury. Exposure to extreme degrees of cold results in severe localized injuries or hypothermia. The peripheral cold injuries include frostnip, chilblains, frostbite, and gangrene in the increasing order of severity. Armed forces soldiers are exposed to extreme degrees of altitude and temperature in the line of duty guarding our borders. We recently encountered a soldier, who presented with persisting pain and discoloration after cold injury and detailed evaluation revealed the diagnosis of CRPS with significant response to the use of Zoledronic acid therapy. We present this report to highlight the unusual presentation of the CRPS and also discuss the spectrum of the cold injuries.
