Abstract
The 2012 Users' Meeting of the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS) convened June 5–6 at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY. CHESS director Sol Gruner opened the meeting welcoming 144 participants with updates on funding, projects, and accomplishments in X-ray research as well as X-ray and accelerator physicist training. Over the past year CHESS hosted 776 user visits from 115 institutes around the US and world (84% academic institutions, the remainder government and industry). He recalled the highly successful six two-day workshops on “Science at the Hard X-ray Diffraction Limit” – XDL2011, cosponsored by CHESS, SSRL, DESY, and KEK, whose results have been summarized in SRN [1–2]. He introduced new Cornell faculty involvement: Ritchie Patterson (Physics) is now director of the Cornell Laboratory for Accelerator-Based Sciences and Education (CLASSE), the umbrella organization that manages CHESS, after Maury Tigner's retirement; Joel Brock (A&EP) is now CHESS associate director and Matthew Miller (MAE) the faculty liaison, while CHESS associate director Donald Bilderback is retiring at the end of the year.
