Abstract

Experiments in Democracy assembles thirteen essays illustrating how the American stage cultivated and complicated cross-cultural dialogues about democracy before the civil rights movement. It addresses the role of performance in fostering inclusivity and social justice by highlighting representative works, including dance drama, radio drama, scripted political rallies, and Broadway shows.
