Abstract

THEMED to Chemurgy in War, 9th Annual Chemurgic Conference met at Drake Hotel in Chicago on March 24 and 25 and somberly reviewed life on chemurgic front. To L. J. Taber, past master of National Grange, chemurgy ranked with the cross and starspangled banner as hope of mankind. To others, chemurgy's limits were definite and doubts were expressed as to whether it would be as big a help in solving national shortages, such as rubber, as original enthusiastic drum-beating foresaw. Plants as Rubber Sources The chemurgists first heard rumble of doubt from Lewis Knudson, head of botany at Cornell University, reporting on investigations of plants as rubber sources. He said in effect, no plants are recommended at present; we must get something better than what we have.
