Abstract
Five Vitex species have been examined for the presence of flavonoids, pseudo-indicans (iridoids), volatile oils and Vitex-Triterpene I. The chemical composition is similar for four species with the striking exception of Vitex megapotamica. Related species have been shown to possess remarkable differences in their secondary products. It seems as if chemical characteristics are more indicative of physiological similarities than of morphological plant relationships.
