Abstract

A series of ruthenium(II) mixed-ligand complexes containing 2(1H)-pyridinethione (C 5H 5NS) or 1-hydroxypyridine-2-thione (C 5H 5NOS) and bis(diphenylphosphino) alkanes, Ph 2P(CH 2) m PPh 2 ( m = 1–4), and a tritertiaryphosphine, (Ph 2PCH 2CH 2) 2PPh (triphos), of stoichiometry: RuA 2L (HA = C 5H 5NS or C 5H 5NOS; L = a di- or tri-tertiary phosphine) have been prepared. The complexes were obtained by the reactions of (i) RuL n Cl 2 [ n = 2 for L ( m = 1, 3) or n = 1.5 for L ( m = 4)] with HA ligands in the presence of triethylamine, (ii) RuA 2(PPh 3) 2 with L ( m = 2; triphos; HA = C 5H 5NS), or (iii) RuCl 2(PPh 3) 3 with C 5H 5NOS and L ( m = 2; triphos) in the presence of triethylamine and characterized using analytical data, IR, far-IR, UV-vis, 1H and 13C NMR, and cyclic voltammetry. The geometry about Ru II is distorted octahedral with SRuS in the bent trans-configuration (SRuS, ca 155°), with phosphines occupying cis-positions.
