Abstract

The reactions of mercuric halides (HgX2) with a number of Group VI substituted carbonyl derivatives have been investigated and the compounds (π-C6H3Me3)M(CO)3,2HgX2(M = Cr, X = Cl; M = Mo, X = Cl or Br), (1,3,5-C7H8)Mo(CO)3,HgX2(X = Cl or Br; 1,3,5-C7H8= cyclohepta-1,3,5-triene), bipy M(CO)3,HgX2(M = Mo or W; X = Cl or Br; bipy = 2,2′-bipyridyl), bipy W(CO)3,2HgCl2, diphos M(CO)4,HgCl2(M = Mo or W; diphos = 1,2-diphenylphosphinoethane), diphos2M(CO)2,2HgX2(M = Mo or W; X = Cl, Br, or I) isolated. Reaction of Ph3PFe(CO)4 with mercuric chloride yields the compounds Ph3PFe(CO)4,2HgCl2. The bipy M(CO)4 compounds (M = Mo or W) also react with stannic chloride to give complexes bipy M(CO)3,SnCl4. Conductivity, i.r., and some magnetic data are given and possible formulations are suggested. Many of these derivatives are best formulated as Lewis acid–base adducts with donation from the transition metal to the mercury halide.
