Abstract

Abstract The Darzens-type condensation of α-haloaldehyde (2) with methyl chloroacetate has been studied. The reaction of aliphatic α-chloroaldehydes afforded 4-chloro-2,3-epoxyalkanoates (4). The reaction of 2-bromo-2-methylpropanal (2d) with methyl chloroacetate gave α-chloro-γ,γ-dimethyl-Δα,β-butenolide (7) as a major product. α-Bromo-n-alkanal gave a mixture of many minor products.
