Abstract

Abstract Singly charged clusters of V, Cr, Mn, Fe, and Co metal and metal oxides, containing up to four metal atoms, are produced in a sputtering source. Radiofrequency ion guides are used to store the clusters for cooling by collisional relaxation and to study gas-phase reactions of the clusters. Preliminary studies of reactions of “hot” metal and metal oxide clusters with ethylene, studies of cooling efficiency of the clusters, and a comparison of reactions of cooled and hot cobalt clusters at several translational energies are reported.
